Exogenous lactate and endurance performance

Could supplying lactate from outside the body support endurance performance? An evidence-aware look at the rationale, the early data and the open questions.

Endurance performance is, in large part, a question of fuelling. If lactate is a usable fuel, can supplying it externally help? This is one of the central questions ExoLactate research addresses.

The rationale

Endurance athletes already oxidise large amounts of lactate during exercise. In principle, providing additional lactate could add to the available substrate pool or influence how other fuels are used. This is a reasonable hypothesis grounded in established physiology.

What the early data suggest

A small number of human trials have examined oral lactate in cycling contexts, looking at acid–base balance and performance. The results are preliminary and do not yet justify strong performance claims.
